SEASIDE SCOOP by Peggy Fisher

Full Description:

January 12, 2005 Trapping Time Tips & Tricks Perhaps it would be a good idea, fantastic as it sounds, to muffle every telephone, stop every motor and halt all activity for one hour some day just to give people a chance to ponder for a few minutes on what it is all about, why they are living and what they really want. —James Truslow Adams (1878-1949) Historian There is nothing like a dream to create the future. —Victor Hugo Fellow Writer Georgina's Time Tracking Tip #1: Write emails as I watch TV. ************************************* Welcome! Welcome to Seaside Scoop, strengthening our word power and memories incrementally while linking friends and wildlife supporters across Florida and the globe. Seaside Scoop readers span Florida, 35 states, Guam and 15 countries abroad. (Your email address is safe. Seaside Scoop will never sell, rent or disclose your email address to third parties.) A warm welcome to newest Seaside Scoop readers Becky Novak from New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Cheryl Radeloff, an educational professional coming to Seaside Scoop via Troy McGinnis in Las Vegas. ****************************************** Word-for-the-Day World Wide Words is copyright (c) Michael Quinion 2004. Turns of Phrase: Nanopublishing ------------------------------------------------------------------- This word has been around for nearly two years, though it has only in recent months begun to be at all common. It's a development of the blogging revolution. Some bloggers have realized that the format allows them to reach large numbers of people very quickly and cheaply and that - through a mixture of sponsorship, donations and targeted links to online marketing sites such as Amazon - it is possible to make money. The essence of the approach is to provide a targeted audience with informed news and comment on some specialist subject, whether it's political gossip or the latest in electronic gadgets (or even the English language). The idea behind the name for the technique uses the prefix "nano-" in a figurative sense of something extremely small-scale. * From Newsday, 16 Feb. 2004: It was launched by New York-based Brit Nick Denton - who also started the ultra-hip blog site Gawker.com, a mix of New York party gossip and news. Denton's approach to online publishing is part of a trend that's been dubbed "nanopublishing." * From the Guardian, 18 Nov. 2004: In a final piece of nanopublishing news, the pair behind Guardian blog award-winning The Big Smoker have relaunched as the London outpost of the blog network Gothamist. ************************************ Over the River & Through the Woods….and Back Delighted to be home again after visiting the central Florida city of beautiful old historic homes, horse country and hills—Ocala, FL. Note to anyone who exercises in flat places like Vero Beach: Ocala is a big change—the hills make a terrific workout—like your treadmill on elevation. But your legs, if only used to power walking on flat lands and beaches, will feel the difference with that wonderful soreness that comes when you’ve had a great workout. Calves, shins, feet and thighs all report they’ve been well worked and truly tested. ****************************************** Mail Call Upali Mahanama: Greetings from Sri Lanka! I met you last in Miami in 1977 when I was JCI vice president. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then. Thanks a lot for highlighting my email to Vernon recently in Seaside Scoop….This is the worst disaster in our history. The Sea Coast is devastated. I am working round the clock doing my little bit for the victims. I am sad & tired - but I will continue what I have to do in this hour of need. Sea water came within 150 yards of my house at Dehiwala. We were saved but not thousands who lived by the sea. I cannot describe the horror & devastation. After engaging in relief work for the victims, I decided to constitute Trust as a vital long term project. With a few distinguished friends we agreed to form a Trust which will be effectively managed. Roshan, who is a Trustee, spearheads a Promotional Campaign to raise funds nationally & internationally. We plan to build about 100 houses for the homeless. The response for donations is excellent. We are very keen to ensure that the Trust is administered with absolute transparency & effective financial controls. I am CEO. We will not incur any administrative costs unless there is a dire need. At all times we will endeavour to get things done free of charge or in an honorary capacity, as this is a humanitarian project. The Trustees are already making a great contribution in fund raising & bearing certain attendant expenses. They will continue to do so. We have raised approximately Rs.600,000/= in the 1st week with no expenses at all. The Legal Advisor & the Auditors are also honorary. We have to make big sacrifices selflessly. Any support you can offer will be deeply appreciated. May the merit you gain from this effort bless you & your loved ones always! May the New Year usher in an era of happiness & outstanding success for you & your loved ones! Vernon Matthysen in South Africa: Have a great break in the woods on your "Florida Safari." Bill Schauman in Florida: To launch Global Lifeguards, we have developed the Health and Safety Scholarship Fund and the Public Safety Relief Fund. To encourage participation we have also developed the Junior Global Lifeguards Gift of life Talent Search and the Real Life Hero Featured Articles section. Thanks President and Founder, Bill Schauman, PS we can now help with disasters through our Public Safety Relief Fund. —for details see www.glgs.org (Site Hits: 166,948) Troy McGinnis in Las Vegas: While few of us grown-ups might have ever heard this word in common usage, millions of young readers have already added "squib" to their vocabularies. "Squib" is also the word used by characters in J. K. Rowlings "Harry Potter" series to describe a person born to magical parents, but who has little or no magical ability--not quite a "muggle," but not a wizard, either. It might be a good idea to share the etymology with our kids so that they understand why "Squib" is a somewhat derogatory term in Rowlings' work. Okay, I admit it: I read Harry Potter. All of 'em. Lee in Ft Pierce, FL: Let’s all get together and clean up The Indian River Lagoon and coastal shores that surround it in St. Lucie County and the Treasure Coast, Sat Feb 12, 2005. Thank you so much for putting out the news release, via Seaside Scoop! Vivian in Miami, FL: Happy New Year! I hope you are doing well and that you are blessed in the New Year! Have you ever considered hiring/using virtual help? They can be a tremendous resource to save you time & $$$; read on, if you own a company or are in a management position to hire staff: Virtual Agent Gayle in Wisconsin: What do all successful business people have in common? First, they surround themselves with good people. And then they delegate to those people. Learn how the likes of Bill Gates, Larry King, George Bush, Jeff Mills, Minh Pham, Alan Brymer, Donald Trump, and Robert Kiyosaki, just to name a few, have used the power of delegation and outsourcing to save them time and help them make more money. "What's your single most important question about hiring or using a virtual assistant?" Just go to http://www.askgaylebuske.com "What's your single most important question about hiring or using a virtual assistant?" Georgina, fellow writer in Coral Gables, FL: Graphics DEFINITELY better -- fully visible -- on left!.... Another great Seaside Scoop. Trapping Time off to super start! And so glad the graphics are now on the left: I can see them all….... Powell was horrified: "I've never seen anything like this." And now the children are at risk...for exploitation as child laborers, as -- I must call it as it is -- child prostitutes. Horrific. WWII Vet Alex in Vero Beach: A squid is a young boy (eldest son) who will some day become a Squire--Happy New Year! Alex ***************************************************** How You Can Help Tsunami Victims Kudos to Chris and Carol Quinton in England, Lois and Gene Somberg in Coral Gables and Regina and Walt, Provost in Sarasota for their fast financial help to tsunami victims as soon as the news broke of this monstrous disaster.
