Triaging Time
Time is your most precious resource. How you use it will determine the quality of your life.
—Seaside Scoop reader Bob Beard in Detroit, Michigan, who checks the column online on the Global Lifeguard website daily; more tips from Bob to come in future editions.
You may have noticed the title of this new feature has evolved from the alliterative, tongue-tripping Trapping Time: Tips & Tricks to Triaging Time. My overactive Muse, who pursues with ideas like a harpy on the warpath, chattered in the shower this weekend that TTTT is weak. Time—our most precious, non-renewable resource deserves a stronger “T” headline. Triage describes perfectly the feeling of time’s essence slipping through the hourglass of our days, weeks and lives. There is never enough time for all our hopes, desires and dreams, let alone all the demands on our attention and lives in our fast-forward 21st century. All we can do is triage—doing out best to take care of not only what is continually urgent, but also what is important—where we dream of going, whom we hope to become, and how we aspire to change ourselves and our world.
Triage tells the tale:
tri·age
Pronunciation: trE-'?zh, 'trE-"
Function: noun
Etymology: French, sorting, sifting, from trier to sort, from Old French -- more at TRY
: the sorting of and allocation of treatment to patients and especially battle and disaster victims according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors; broadly : the assigning of priority order to projects on the basis of where funds and resources can be best used or are most needed

Word-for-the-Day
earwig EER-wig verb
: to annoy or attempt to influence by private talk
Example sentence:
"[He] earwigged the big man at the Labour conference, asking him to take the lead in banning tobacco advertising from newspapers." (Stephen Cook, The Guardian [London], October 1986)
Did you know?
Earwigs are small insects that were once thought to crawl into the ears of sleeping people. This isn't true — earwigs prefer moist, dark places under leaves and rocks to human ears — but the superstition led people to name the insect "?arwicga," Old English for "ear insect." Over time, people connected the idea of having an insect in one's ear to situations that involve whispering or speaking privately into someone's ear. The noun "earwig" came to also mean "a whispering busybody" (though this sense is now considered archaic), and the verb "earwig" evolved to refer to the acts of such meddlers.

From Virtual Agent Gayle’s Double Clicker enews, a great Googling tip:
Tips and Tricks by Gayle...
Google Alerts!
Every business needs various tools and information to succeed. Recently, I was introduced to a very handy tool that can help you find leads and even help you keep an eye on the competition. It’s called Google Alerts.
To access Google Alerts:
Go to http://www.google.com/alerts?hl=en
Enter your search criteria
Enter your email address
Enter how often you’d like to receive alerts (I do mine daily)
Signing up for Google Alerts is free.
I have about 10 different search criteria and have my alerts delivered to my email on a daily basis. The searches can be just about anything; like the name of a major competitor, a particular keyword for an industry you target, or even phrases. One of my search criteria is my own name so I can see where the articles I’ve written come up on the web.
Once you have your alerts set up, Google will automatically do a web search each day and report the newest findings for that search criteria back to you. For example, if your search criteria were “financial advisors”, Google would search the web for all new sites that their bots find with those key words in it.
When it finds new matches, it sends you an email with links to the sites where it located those keywords.
So be creative with your criteria; enter the names of your competitors so you can see what pops up on them, enter key words for industries you want to target with your marketing, even enter your own name as a search item to see what others are saying about you.

Georgina, fellow writer in Coral Gables: See Georgina’s Golden Globes Gander and Movie Reviews, below; Gayle was trying to teach me hyperlinking within documents this weekend, but afraid I haven’t quite mastered it yet, so please scroll down, or do a Find ;-).
Breaking News: It worked! Thank you, Gayle! To reach the Gander, select underlined text and do Control—Tech Tip—what u basically do is a book mark and then hyperlink it, but like so many Microsoft tricks, it’s a bit complicated. Will use it when I can remember all the steps! By right clicking, you can edit the bookmark and hyperlinks, copy, delete, etc., but that’s when it really gets confusing, and you may be sending your reader far away from where you’d hoped.

SRI LANKA DISASTER RELIEF
I’m sure by now you would have heard of the terrible tragedy that hit among other nations, the island of Sri Lanka. Our immediate family is safe but I have yet to hear from some cousins who were in the affected areas.... and I know of friends and their families who perished. You will be pleased to know that the old Jaycee training works... deeply involved in mobilizing efforts in South Florida with fund raisers especially for the long-term rebuilding and restoration of a destroyed nation. A group of us Sri Lankans living in south Florida are collecting donations to help relief efforts and have set up a bank account at Washington Mutual Bank, Pinecrest. If you would like to help—and here any amount—no matter how small, will be gratefully accepted-please send your check, made out to: Sri Lanka Disaster Relief Fund
and mail it to me at 6820 SW 28 Terrace Miami Fl 33155. I will be happy to make the arrangements to have the funds channeled through the RED CROSS in SRI LANKA where the relief efforts are already underway... If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call at 305 661 8855 or 305 335 2373. Or email: shirleypw1@bellsouth.net
Many Thanks. Shirley Wijesinha

News at 11, as Capo Phil would say.
Georgina’s Movie Reviews
Bad Education (La Mala Educacion): even the title of Pedro Almodovar's latest has so many layers of meaning that you quickly realize you're caught up in a tangled web of a maze. This movie deliberately steps in and out of the present and past, keeps you guessing to the point that when you're ready to say, Aha!, you realize that you're not, after all, getting it. Almodovar's story about two thirty-something men, their relationship with each other in the present and in the past, and with the small circle of intimates that surrounds them, is a surrealistic, yet in your face, depiction of life: love, lust, greed, hate, revenge. In one word: passion. Gael Garcia Bernal -- who most recently portrayed the young Ernesto "Che" Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries -- is nothing short of extraordinary with his multidimensional performance. The rest of the cast also delivers excellent performances -- the boy who plays Ignacio as a child has the exquisite soprano of the prepubescent: tremulous yet sure, both here, and there. This is a very strong movie: not for the faint of heart. Not seriocomic as Almodovar's other vehicles, you have to be ready to watch, to listen, and to learn. The cinematography teaches you a lesson, in and of itself: as the movie fades away, you see only one word on the screen. Pasion (Passion). That's Almodovar's ultimate message to you via La Mala Educacion. Brilliant.
In Good Company: The Weitz brothers (American Pie, About A Boy) have produced another of their "coming of age" winners in this movie about a young man (Topher Grace) who becomes the boss of a man twice his age (Dennis Quaid) and learns that to be on top doesn't always mean that you come out on top. What I enjoyed most about this movie is that everyone was so believable in his/her role: Grace as the Young Turk, painfully aware that he's both a know-it-all and a know-nothing; Quaid as the older, wiser family man who has both guts and values; Scarlett Johansson (of Lost In Translation) as Quaid's sweet, savvy daughter who has a mind of her own; and CSI's Marg Helgenberger as Quaid's wife, bewildered at finding herself in the midst of middle age expectant motherhood. The supporting cast were also -- let's just call them, real people. Closer to About A Boy than to American Pie in sentiment and scope, of course, this movie kept my interest all the way through. Not spectacular, perhaps, it nonetheless depicted its slice of life spectacularly enough. Just how old IS Topher Grace, anyway? He looks like a baby! (Just checked: he's 26, his age in the movie. Good job.)
