In Memoriam for Johnny
Georgina’s Review: Letterman's Heeeere’s Johnny
Letterman finally had his tribute to Carson. It was touching beyond words. One of The Tonight Show's original producers (Peter Lassally; the other one is the legendary Freddie deCordova) and Doc Severinsen were Dave's guests. Doc even played the trumpet: a beautiful, haunting melody, obviously meant to reach Johnny wherever he is. I don't know what made me tear up more: that, or the clip from Johnny's brief appearance on Letterman in 94, when he sat behind Dave's desk, looking for all the world as if he belonged there, and then graciously ceded the seat -- lest we call it, the throne -- back to Dave. When Dave's serious, it's hard to know sometimes when/if he's really being serious, or ??? No doubts tonight. Also: he opened his monologue with Johnny's jokes... and told the audience about it.

Beach Re-nourishment: Post Hurricane Terrors Frances & Jeanne Dune Restoration Project—the big dump trucks are again busy at Wabasso bringing in tons of sand. They will be working along approximately 15,000-feet of Atlantic shoreline replacing 92,340 tons of beach compatible sand along affected sites. The project is being funded by FEMA, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Indian River County. The media has reported they need to be done before turtle nesting season begins March 1. However, postings list project start date mid-January 2005 and completion date May, 2005. The emergency permit for construction expires February 15, more in line with the fast-approaching turtle deadline. Stay tuned; more news at 11 as Summer Place legend Capo Phil proclaims.
