Seaside Scoop Secret Sources:

Wabasso Beach Scoop

Great news from a favorite Seaside Scoop Secret Source: Wabasso Beach may be reopened in a month without waiting until the end of turtle season Oct. 31 before repairs can begin on the destroyed lifeguard stand, board walk and bathrooms. Lifeguards may be back with temporary chairs as they have at Golden Sands (also awaiting repairs until after turtle season) and, as importantly when you need ones, they may bring back those Port-a-Potties as they had when the Wabasso restrooms were closed for repairs.

If you have any clout with authorities who make these decisions, please tell them Barrier Island homeowners, tourists, beachgoers, surfers and fisher folk would all greatly appreciate this happening…sooner instead of later. As for our complaints about the Port-a-Potties when repairs were taking so long, those fierce Tropical Mentors Frances and Jeanne certainly taught us stern lessons in appreciating the basics. A lesson to remember when we are privileged to enjoy life on a fragile barrier island and beautiful city by the sea, like Vero Beach.

Mail Call

Bobcat Sighting: Neighbor Charley Schoonover reports a large bobcat sighted midday at the rear of his residence on Shell Lane in Summerplace. Charley described the cat as mottled brown with a stubby tail and about the size of a medium-sized dog. He was alerted by his dog Piper who was barking at his back screen door. The bobcat slowly proceeded west, stopping momentarily at the back corner of my own house, then south into the woods off SR 510.This is the second sighting in this area within the last few weeks. A second neighbor reported seeing a very large cat-like animal in the same are a few weeks back. I had always thought bobcats were strictly nocturnal and was surprised at a high noon sighting. I hope i don’t have a chance encounter on my early morning walk along Jungle Trail. Thought you’d like to know. —Not so Secret Source, Richard, Summerplace Angler

Wabasso Beach/Hurricane Updates Reliable Seaside Scoop Secret Sources report work on restoring Wabasso and Golden Sands Beaches is now stalled until after Turtle Season ends, October 31, 2005, at the end of our next six-month Hurricane Season. Some meteorologists are warning 2005 may be as bad as 2004. That’s bad news for all Florida, so slammed by four Tropical Terrors, and Vero Beach, as Ground Zero twice, where many of us are still trying get out from under one or more blue tarps protecting our damaged roofs. Warning: They wear out! We are already on our second tarp, covering the first, which allowed heavy recent rains to destroy part of a bathroom ceiling. It’s a bad deal when 1/3 of the insulation and ceiling stuff are in your tub!

Tracking the Turtle Trackers: Always friendly Beach Master Jeff reports the Animal Kingdom Turtle volunteers met briefly at Disney before turtle season began March 1 to discuss their plans. Neither Jeff nor any of our Seaside Scoop sources have seen any sign of the elusive and rare Leatherbacks which are the first turtles to nest in the season from March – November. But Jeff says this is normal and hopefully not do to the hurricane devastation. Usually, there is not much turtle action in the beginning of the season.

Disney Ray Sighting: Jeff reports other Disney excitement was the sightings of a 12-foot Manta Ray that created such a wide disturbance in the ocean, at first observers thought it might be a whale. New-born “baby” rays are four feet across and the largest reported sighting was a great 30-foot-across ray. They can weigh up to 4000 pounds.

Other Disney News:
An inside Disney source reports after Jeanne’s fury pounded our Barrier Island, hundreds of crabs sought safety in the hotel’s kitchen, pool and wherever they could find a spot. Crews continue to work away at building Disney’s new boardwalk; guests are rerouted to use the CoralStone’s beach-access stairs.

Reflections about Dogs: Met a couple at Wabasso beach not only picking up after their big dog with a plastic bag, but doggie’s Mom reports they also pick up trash whenever they are taking their pup to the beach. Kudos; makes up for young girl spotted this weekend with another big dog, making no effort to clean up after her pooch who did his business right near Sea Oaks beach-access steps. It was too gorgeous a day to spoil by giving her a lecture, but how irresponsible. At least one positive thought—doggie do is biodegradable, so better than plastic for wildlife ;-)!

From Lee in Port St. Lucie:— LOLOL Thanks for the heads up about picking up after pups on our beaches!

Kudos to John Pecora! Kudos to John Pecora in Saco, Maine, for the birth of his 6th grandchild and for the great work he’s done for over two years as Global Lifeguards Volunteer Coordinator. With emails and calls, he’s kept us all motivated to increase our efforts to promote coastal safety, conservation and inspiration from the sea. Holidays and any time perils threatened, we’d get a personal call from John, as when the four Tropical Terrors crisscrossed Florida in 2004 like mad dervishes bent on wild distruction. He patrols his beaches daily with his canine pal, in temps we in the balmy Sunshine State wouldn’t consider even opening our doors. Go, John! Thank you for sharing weekly Seaside Scoop enews with family and friends.

You are our inspiration.

From Neal McLaughlin, Global Lifeguards Volunteer Administrator: Greetings, I take this time to acknowledge all of our dedicated volunteers and to those who have shown interest in becoming involved in the life- guarding, first aid or other important endeavor through continuous training. As we are all aware, Global Lifeguards is a nonprofit organization extending our hands into environmental, health and safety and financial support through our Emergency Workers Relief Fund, Health and Safety Fun and our Scholarship Fund.

However, these important programs need your contributions to reach fruition. Without your support we may have insufficient funds to assist those who contact us for help. Not only is it possible to make a tax-deducible donation to your favorite program, Global Lifeguards has now established our own mini-mall with links to a variety of stores. By purchasing from one of these affiliates Global Lifeguards receives a generous commission for one of our funds.

I invite you to visit these variety stores. New stores are being added continuously so you may wish to bookmark our website. We are affiliated with surf shops, shoe stores, beach wear distributors and lifeguard supply stores. Before you make your next purchase on line, I urge you to please visit one of our affiliates. Global Lifeguards is here to make a difference, however, without you this task will be difficult.

Visit our website: www.glgs.org and take a tour through our mall.
