PEGGY FISHER'S SEASIDE SCOOP

Full Description:

April 22, 2005: early edition Celebrate Earth Day! Every day is Earth Day. ~Author Unknown Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most notable environmental event worldwide. Over 500 million people in over 180 countries stage events and projects to address local environmental issues. First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement. Click for free on the wildlife causes below and make a difference for Earth Day…and every day: I'm not an environmentalist. I'm an Earth warrior. ~Darryl Cherney, quoted in Smithsonian I conceive that the land belongs to a vast family of which many are dead, few are living, and countless numbers are still unborn. ~A Chieftain from Nigeria We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ~Native American Proverb Your free click just fed an apple to a hungry primate. There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew. ~Marshall McLuhan Photo: Vero Beach Lifeguards Matt and Mike carefully replant Sea Oats along newly reopened Wabasso Beach to give them direct access to the ocean from their temporary lifeguard stand without endangering the young shoots planted to help restore Frances- and Jeanne-devastated dunes from Summerplace’s wall south past Bay Tree. Lifesaving means caring not only for people but also for our fragile Earth and the endangered wildlife with whom we are privileged to share it. Every day should be Earth Day. Earth Day Kudos to Capo Phil of Summerplace for contributing to Bill Glynn’s North Beach Civic Association. To quote Phil: “They do good work.” —Agree, especially relating to the fight against density, so detrimental to the wildlife and lifestyle of our beautiful Barrier Island. A warm Earth Day welcome to the VEH Consulting family who enjoyed a 10-day visit to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and were sad last Sunday to have to leave paradise. Until their return, they plan to stay in touch from Virginia via Seaside Scoop. Welcome, too, to Kinetic Kids and Will Rose at Wabasso Beach last Sunday; they’ll be sending hyperlinks to their website highlighting their good deeds re helping keep our seas and beaches pristine; good Earth Day and every-day action for us all. Welcome, as well, to Phyllis Schmitz from Oregon in the Far West and Jose Sanchez & family Disney Vacation Club members from Ohio who subscribed right under the wire before press time: —For more from Jose re how he heard in Ohio about the Seaside Scoop Parasol Lady, click on Jose to reach his first Mail Call feedback below. ******************************************* Word for the Week maquette mak-ET noun : a usually small preliminary model (as of a sculpture or a building) Example sentence: At the town meeting the architect presented a maquette of the proposed new school, which will include a state-of-the-art gymnasium and media center. Did you know? "Maquette" came to English directly from French, first appearing in our language in the late 19th century. The French word, which possesses the same meaning as its English descendant, derived from the Italian noun "macchietta," meaning "sketch," and ultimately from the Latin "macula," meaning "spot." Maquettes are generally intended to serve as rough models of larger designs. Architects make maquettes of their buildings, and sculptors often create maquettes in wax or clay to help them realize the final sculpture. ******************************************* Earth Day Kudos to Lee Hedrick Photo: O.N.E.W.I.L.D.W.O.R.L.D. "Dive In" To Earth Day Supporters last year. From Doris Richards: Lee Hedrick has done such a great job in all she does, I thought you would like to print this award in your newsletter; Bob Bangert presented her with the award yesterday. —Congrats to Lee Hedrick who received this honor at the Fairways Restaurant in Ft. Pierce during the St. Lucie County and Martin County Conservation Awards luncheon, April 16, 2005. Environmentalist of the Year Award Presented to Lee Hedrick Several years ago the Conservation Alliance, St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce partnered into applying for and receiving a grant award and started an Adopt a Beach program. Groups were organized to patrol and clean the entire 21 miles of St. Lucie Beaches. The money from the grant went for new trash cans, signs designating who was adopting which beach, gloves, trash bags, and much more. For the first 6 months everything went great but gradually most groups failed to continue cleanups on a 2-month schedule. That is all except one group. Lee Hedrick has continued having regular scheduled cleanups not only of her adopted Surfside Beach but many other areas as well. In fact, she even organized a group of divers that clean up on the floor of the ocean along the beaches. Back in February she cooperated with the Riverkeeper, and they cleaned up a lot of shoreline along the Indian River Lagoon. She has been able to get many young people to take part in these clean-ups and usually is able to get enough donations to have a little picnic for the participants after the cleanup. Due to the efforts of Lee and her regular clean-ups, more than 10 tons of trash has been picked up from the beach and the Indian River Lagoon in the past couple of years. She has, along with the Indian Riverkeeper organization, another clean up scheduled for April 30th. Her motto is “when you visit the beach only leave footprints and bubbles” Oh, by the way in her spare time she volunteers at Harbor Branch, posts a website for her organization of O.N.E.W.I.L.D.W.O.R.L.D. and raises 3 kids. The Conservation Alliance is very happy to be able to make Lee Hedrick the recipient of our environmentalist of the year award. ******************************************* Tracking the Turtles Disney Updates Was delighted to encounter Animal Kingdom Turtle Pro Tom on patrol early this week. Sadly he reports no one has spotted any turtles or signs of nesting from Sebastian to Grand Harbor. But like Disney’s Beach Master Jeff, he agrees it’s still early in the six-month season; hopefully the hurricanes haven’t done so much damage to keep them away from our Treasure Coast. Tom reports the strong winds and tides last weekend have seriously eroded the beaches further especially in front of Summerplace and Sea Oaks, in spots already destroying the just-planted Sea Oats. ******************************************* Environmental Defense Fund Quick Ways to Make a Difference for Earth Day Follow 20 simple steps to help undo global warming - Global warming is our most serious environmental problem. Today, tweak a daily habit or two (or twenty!). Bike or carpool to work. Or even brighten your house with more energy efficiency bulbs. Seaside Scoop Secret Sources If you’d ever like to speak out without being quoted, send your anonymous feedback. Secret Sources was created for you. ******************************************* Triaging Time Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life. —Eckhart Tolle Spiritual teacher Please share your time-saving tips and tricks via Seaside Scoop, if you have time ;-). ******************************************* Mail Citizen’s 354+ Percent Rate Escalation Feedback & News Press Journal: Happy to report the Press Journal printed my Letter to the Editor under their headline: Customers, unite: Protest rate hikes; on Monday, April 18, 2005. It shared Op Ed space with another writer protesting her Citizen’s 61 percent increase. Both protests were under the headline: No Comfort in Insurance—truer words were never said. You read it first in Seaside Scoop! From mentor Suddenly Senior Frank (frank@suddenlysenior.com): Peggy, if enough of us scream, they’ll hear. Add a few more to that, and they’ll act. It’s in this state of silence, that all the mischief takes place. From Rolf J. von Merveldt, Aide to the Governor, Office of Citizens’ Services Thank you for writing to Governor Jeb Bush regarding insurance rate increases. The Governor received your e-mail and asked me to respond on his behalf. As you may know, insurance company regulatory matters are under the administrative authority of the Office of Insurance Regulation in the Department of Financial Services. In an effort to assist you, the Governor has directed that a copy of your letter be forwarded to the department for review. Should you require immediate assistance, you may contact the Department of Financial Services' consumer hot-line 1-800-342-2762. The losses from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne have directly impacted property and casualty insurance rates. The Bush/Jennings administration is committed to working with the Florida Legislature to assist homeowners who have suffered the greatest losses and to address the issue of insurance rates. The Governor is very interested in solutions that will provide affordable insurance rates while continuing to encourage viable private insurance markets in Florida. Governor Bush and Lieutenant Governor Jennings believe insurance should be affordable and accessible and that insurance companies should be dependable, responsive, and efficient. Please be assured that any legislation reaching the Governor’s desk which involves insurance matters receives his close attention. Also, Governor Bush will keep your views in mind should this issue ever come before the Financial Services Commission, of which he is a member. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views. I hope this information will be helpful to you. —Appreciate the prompt response, but not reassured anything’s going to happen From Congressman Dave Weldon: Received a Snail Mail Letter (imagine what that cost!). He said much the same as the Gov.’s Aide, except he wanted me to fill out a two-page form and send more info re my appeal—like what I’m hoping to achieve—try a rate reduction! This is called the FEMA/Insurance Paperwork Shuffle. They hope you’ll get tired and go away. Having played this game for seven long months, tired doesn’t begin to describe my state. But I’m even more determined; persistence always pays, sooner or sometimes very, much later. Have already faxed Dave four pages, repeating my protest. As all our Treasure Coast anglers know so well, if you cast enough times, with the determination of Job & Churchill combined, you’ll ultimately net something worthwhile. From Photos of the Year from Carl Peterson in Guam: From Jose Sanchez, newest Seaside Scoop reader from Ohio: "Are you by chance Peggy Fisher?" We are members of the Disney Vacation Club, reside in Ohio and have been visiting Disney's Vero Beach resort since its initial opening. I believe when I first visited your site, I was directed there by someone on the DIS boards....maybe back around the time of last year's hurricanes :( One thing that always intrigued me...my wife and I always take a morning stroll on the beach there when we're visiting. Someone once said that "you" do likewise and could always be recognized by your umbrella. While we passed you (or whoever it was :) ) every day, I never quite had the nerve to say "Are you by chance Peggy Fisher?" :) Looking forward to receiving Seaside Scoop weekly news!! Thank you & have a great Vero day!! –Happiness is…when my Parasol Lady reputation precedes me down the beach and across our cyber globe ;-) From Wisconsin Virtual Agent Gayle Buske’s 4/15 Double-Clicker enews: The Good & the Bad Game All these busy weeks make me appreciate a little game our family does every night at dinner time called “The Good and the Bad”. Here’s how it’s played: Each night a moderator is chosen. The moderator goes around the table asking everyone what bad happened to them that day. No one is allowed to “knock” another person’s bad (or good for that matter). So if Madi said, “Mom was mad at me today.” I couldn’t come back with, “Because she was arguing with me” or whatever. Then the moderator goes around again and asks everyone what good happened to them that day. This game accomplishes a couple of things. First, it lets everyone vent about what didn’t go right for them that day. Second, it forces everyone to think of something good that happened to them, thus seeing the positives every day. Plus, by doing the “goods” last, it ends the conversation on a happy note. And of course it’s a great way to get kids of all ages talking. Parents – the anti-drug ;-) Sometimes when we’ve had a really good day it’s hard to come up with a bad and visa versa. We’ll often offer a bad such as “I didn’t get to take a nap today” and then when it’s time for the good “I didn’t get to take my nap because we were so busy tending to new clients.” We read about the game in the newspaper several months ago and adopted it immediately. It’s been a new family tradition (almost) every night since. From mentor Al Franco in Ft. Lauderdale, FL: How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change A Light Bulb? 1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb? 2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. 3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp! 4. Rottweiler: Make me. 5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark. 6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please! 7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation. 8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. 9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb? 10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. 11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. 12. Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there ... 13. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares? 14. New Zealand Sheep Dog: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle... 15. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it! . By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. The Cat's Answer: "Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is: How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?" ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF…and dogs have less chance of winning in can-centric Seaside Scoop than blondes…bet on the blondes 2nd, cats 1st and canines, a distant 3rd place. From Woody of Cape Cod, Mass & Vero Beach: THESE ARE VERY INTERESTING TO ME. IT MAKES ME THINK OF HOW MANY TIMES WE SEE THINGS AND SWEAR THEY ARE ONE WAY AND IN ACTUALITY THEY ARE ANOTHER. TAKE A MOMENT OUT OF YOUR DAY TO GO OVER THESE - IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT OR TWO AND YOU MIGHT JUST FEEL A LITTLE MORE RELAXED WHEN YOU ARE THROUGH. Perpetually ascending staircase. How can the man go up all the time and come back to the same place over and over? Fellow writer Georgina in Coral Gables, FL : The Citizens mess is a mess. Another GREAT one, - thanks for the info on how to deal with Citizens. I thank you for the many! That wonderful essay from Maggie Hurtado on the English language - glad it popped up again. Also super-enjoyed Regina Provost’s People are for a Reason, a Season, a Lifetime…. Reason, Season, Lifetime: need to reread it as often as necessary. From Lee in Port St. Lucie, FL: Earth Day Virtual March I'd like to invite you to the first ever Earth Day Virtual March. Earth Day is just one week away, so this year have all the fun of marching to honor our planet, without standing in the rain! We really need your participation to meet our goal of 90,000 marchers - we're nearly there. Go to: http://www.care2.com/go/z/marchnow What is the Earth Day Virtual March? It's a massive grassroots campaign mobilizing people around the country to protest the latest threat to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge posed by the Senate, as well as other anti-conservation policies. Earth Day is the time to ask why our government is willing to desecrate one of the few "protected" pristine wildernesses we have left, and to speak up for our future. It's not too late to stop the drilling! You won't have to go to Washington or get blisters. And, you can watch the March grow on your computer screen! When you join the March we'll send you a personalized impact map so you can literally see your influence spread from friend to friend across the country. Then, on Earth Day, we'll send tens of thousands of letters from all March participants to their Senators, in a nationwide show of support for conservation. You can be sure they'll hear from slick corporate lobbyists pushing to relax environmental protections, so please make your voice heard today: Thank you! It is important to find a man you can count on and doesn't lie to you. 4. It is important that a man loves you and spoils you. 5. It is important that these four men don't know each other. From Judith Wilson in Ocala, FL: Court Testimony These are from a book called "Disorder in the American Courts" and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place. _______________________________ Q: How old is your son, the one living with you? A: We do. Q: You do? A: Yes, voodoo. From Carolyn Kaiser, wife/partner of my mentor Suddenly Senior Frank with their amazing 1.5+ million readers: "Dogs come when they're called; cats take a message and get back to you later." —Mary Bly "People that hate cats, will come back as mice in their next life." Faith Resnick THE PASTOR'S CAT Whoever said the Creator doesn't have a sense of humor? A Pastor of a local church had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went "boing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No, nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business. A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?" She replied, "You won't believe this," and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it." She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her." Never underestimate God's sense of humor. From Chris Quinton in England: Marriage Quotes: The Gods Gave Man Fire And He Invented Fire Engines They Gave Him Love And He Invented Marriage. I Had Some Words With My Wife, And She Had Some Paragraphs With Me. "I Don't Worry About Terrorism. I Was Married For Two Years." "There's A Way Of Transferring Funds That Is Even Faster Than Electronic Banking. It's Called Marriage." "The Secret Of A Successful Marriage Is Not To Be At Home Too Much." From Judith Wilson in Ocala, FL: THE HILLBILLY LOVE POEM SUSIE LEE DONE FELL IN LOVE; SHE PLANNED TO MARRY JOE. SHE WAS SO HAPPY 'BOUT IT ALL SHE TOLD HER PAPPY SO. PAPPY TOLD HER, SUSIE GAL, YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER. I'D JUST AS SOON YO' MA DON'T KNOW, BUT JOE IS YO' HALF BROTHER. SO SUSIE PUT ASIDE HER JOE AND PLANNED TO MARRY WILL, BUT AFTER TELLING PAPPY THIS, HE SAID, THERE'S TROUBLE STILL. Those wishing to help should contact me at leeclymer@bellsouth.net . The first areas I need help in is to find actual damaged areas needing mitigation. Secondly we must find volunteers and directors to accomplish the work and best utilize the money. People with insight into these areas please contact me. If nothing else I would like to raise awareness about drainage mitigation, grass bed damage, and the cruise ship dumping, our three biggest polluters. I have the lines on the bands, the venue (Kiwanis Park - Merritt Island) and someone to assist with the project management. We just need a clear cut direction, etc. I have the broad overview but need to really start nailing down the particulars. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help even a little. Shirley Wijesinha. ******************************************* Critic’s Corner: Millions By Georgina Marrero When the old (the Pound Sterling) meets the new (the Euro), something is bound to happen. In this satirical allegory (for lack of a better name), a little boy is playing outside when, lo and behold, a duffel bag full of money falls from the sky. In his innocence, he believes it's a gift from God. His story weaves back and forth between the sacred (Saints materialize out of nowhere to speak with him) and the profane (recently motherless, his father's trying to carve out a better life for him and his brother and moves them to a "better" neighborhood where thieves pop up, especially at Christmastime). Sometimes, however, the line is blurred, as when he gives the "poor" Mormons a bit of the money, only to have some of it ending up in the purchase of a foot spa - go figure...). His two worlds finally collide -- or, perhaps, mesh -- during his school's Nativity Play (which is, of course, when the original robbers ransack his house, looking for their stolen loot). In the soon to be short run, however, the Pound is converted into the Euro: "If you don't spend it, you lose it" is the motto. The ending is a good little boy's fantasy come true: perhaps a bit contrived. But the journey - what he learns, what we learn - is worth it. If you have a favorite movie, book or television review you’d like to shares, the Critic’s Corner has space saved for you. ******************************************* Spring Cheers from Vero Beach, Peggy Writing by Fisher Vero Beach, FL (772)388-4920 Turn the wheel of your life.
